How LunchLook started

It started at my kitchen counter, the way most things in our house do.

Every morning was the same gamble: do I pack my kids a lunch, or not? Pack one on nacho day, and it came home spoiled and untouched. Skip it on pizza day — they love pizza, just not the school's — and they came home hangry. Guess wrong either way, and something got wasted: the food, the morning, or a good mood.

So I started checking the district menu every morning before school. Grab a device, pull up the site, find the school, the month, the day. Five or six clicks, every single morning — times 180 school days a year. And it always landed on one of the adults to remember to look it up, ask if the kids would eat it, and pack accordingly.

One weekend I tried something. I screenshotted the menu, used a little AI to turn it into a calendar file — and it worked. Eventually I emailed and texted it to other parents, thinking it might help them too. It caught on fast; a few even started thanking me around town.

The best part I never planned for: once the menu lived on our family's digital calendar in the kitchen, my kids started checking it themselves and telling us when they needed a lunch packed. Mornings got easier — our kids were fed and happy, with no guessing and no waste.

While things got better at home, I was still the point of failure — for our family, and now for other families too. If the menu ran late, I'd get the texts. Fast-forward, and the menu now runs itself (thank you, automation). At the end of each month, the tool reads the next month's lunch calendar and publishes it to a calendar you subscribe to. After that, it keeps updating on its own.

Building a business was never the goal — making mornings easier, getting calories in kids, and raising money for our local schools is. We've partnered with the district's education foundation, and every subscription helps fund the schools LunchLook serves.

That's the whole story. One less thing to handle in that scramble between waking up and school — times 180 mornings a year — and a little something for our schools.
